Towards the end of the day, we got a desperate plea for help from two ladies who had come in looking to purchase capstar (but they were out. The ladies needed help for a dog that had been dropped off in their neighborhood in the Cottondale area of Tuscaloosa, AL. They stated the dog had been at a neighbors house for two weeks and was recently attacked by another dog. We were told the dog was female, approx 12 yrs old, and was covered in maggots, fleas, and ants. Ladies said they had no money to take to the dog to a vet.

A volunteer spoke up quickly to help and the ladies came back with the dog. After initial evaluation, the dog is actually a male, is an adult dog but not older, and has been attacked on at least two separate occasions. The dogs eyes have been ruptured for a while now.....weeks, possibly months, and terribly infected. The dog, who has now been named Mr. Dewey by the foster, also has a broken jaw as well. His lacerations are 4-5 days old.

roots

Anyone involved with rescue would know how dire the situation is for many animals in Alabama.  It is true that the larger metropolitan areas generally have a more progressive attitude in relation to animal issues but there are many (mostly rural) areas that do not.  In the vacuum many amazing individuals have taken on the challenge of caring for and saving as many animals as they can.

Joe Olivieri & David Cowardin are two journalist from Minnesota who recently visited Alabama to document the stories of rescuers.  "Roots of Rescue" focuses on the animal welfare issues in Alabama and the incredible efforts of animal rescuers.
